I live in central Texas and I am way over the hill, closer to the
century mark than the half century.
Many of the ads on www. sassociations. net are seeking sexual or
romantic interests, contrary to the site’s rules. This means I
have to sort through a lot of chaff to find what I am looking
for, a lifelong, platonic friendship developed by long emails or
snail mail..
If you are unable or unwilling to string together 500 or more
intelligible words in your missives, please don’t bore me. The
500+ word rule is not set in concrete, as it is merely a
suggestion. Friendship should be based on spontaneity not rules.
Write something interesting about yourself and I will do the
same.
The term pen pals alludes to the days before the advent of the
cell phone, when the only way to communicate with distant
strangers was by snail mail with pen and paper.
The invention of the landline telephone made distant
communication easier, but it was expensive back then. Back in
1950, a five-minute-long distance phone call from New York City
to San Francisco cost $3. 70, which is equivalent to $50. 00 these
days. Compare that to a one-ounce letter that only costs 3 cents
to mail. If you really wanted your letter to get there fast, you
would lick on a 6-cent airmail stamp on your letter. You actually
had to lick the back of stamps to get it to stick on the
envelope. I can remember using those 3-cent stamps, sending my
Grandma a letter.
How did people hook up before the cell phone? They used to write
to newspapers in distant cities and place an ad in the classified
section under Personal with something like: “I am interested in
bugs. Please write to me at blah blah blah.” Sometimes they would
also write a similar message on 3x5 index cards. They would mail
those cards to libraries and churches in distant cities, asking
them to post them on their bulletin boards.
