Swim In 10 Minutes Todd's mother had been taking him to swimming lessons for a month when she spoke to me. "He still can't swim and I don't know what to do." Juanita told me. I said, "Bring him to my place & I'll see what can be done." They soon arrived at my place and after Juanita left we both changed into swimming trunks. We walked into the pool and I told him, "The first thing that I'm going to teach you is how to float. If you ever get into water over your head you can just float. Relax and lie on your back and I'll hold you up." I told him. He commenced to do so and floated with my arms at his back. "That's it just float and relax." Just a hint of contact initially reassured him of support and I gradually took my hands away. "How are you doing?" I asked. "Fine Dad." he replied. "I took my arms away and you've been floating by yourself." I told him. "Now if you want to rest in the water you can float! OK? "Wow, that's pretty good!" he burst out. "Now do you know how a frog swims?" I asked. "No." he told me so I demonstrated. Arms and legs together for a stroke underwater, then the next stroke up to breath and the next underwater again. "You try it." my next prompt. He did it over the deep end of the pool and went from non-swimmer to strong swimmer in 10 minutes! Todd was eager to test his new abilities so I showed him how to swim to the bottom and retrieve things he threw in. After we played for a while I called his mother to come pick him up. When she walked in I threw Todd in and she was horrified! Todd swam out at once and we all had a big laugh! Now you have a simple way for a patient friend to teach swimming.
