I am an older gentleman who grew up in an age when letters were a viable way to communicate. I can remember my parents sending letters to their brothers and sisters, as "long distance" phone calls were reserved for more dire news (deaths, serious illness, etc.). When I was in college and in the military, letters were the most viable way to keep in touch with family and friends; phone calls back then were more expensive than letters.
